Origin & history
Pregabalin was synthesized in 1990 as an anticonvulsant that was developed as a successor to the related gabapentin . It was first synthesized by medicinal chemist Richard Bruce Silverman at Northwestern University in Evanston , Illinois. During 1988 to 1990, Ryszard Andruszkiewicz, a visiting research fellow, synthesized a series of molecules requested by Silverman. Upon testing in mouse seizure models by collaborators at Parke-Davis Pharmaceuticals , one looked particularly promising. In vitro, it activated L-glutamic acid decarboxylase , an enzyme, but this later proved to be unimportant to
