Data & Statistics

Where does PeekAName get its data?
All our data comes from the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA). The SSA compiles baby name statistics from Social Security card applications, making it the most comprehensive and reliable source of American baby name data.
How far back does the data go?
Our database spans 145 years, from 1880 to 2024. This allows us to show you long-term trends and how names have evolved over generations.
Why are some names not in the database?
The SSA only includes names that appear 5 or more times in a given year to protect individual privacy. Very rare names or unique spellings may not meet this threshold.
How often is the data updated?
We update our database annually when the SSA releases new statistics, typically in May or June for the previous calendar year.
Does the data include non-binary or neutral names?
The SSA data only categorizes names as Male or Female based on the sex recorded on Social Security applications. However, many names are used across genders, and we show these as "unisex" when a name appears for both.

Rankings & Popularity

What does "peak rank" mean?
Peak rank is the highest ranking a name ever achieved in a single year. For example, "Emma" reached #1, meaning it was the most popular girl's name in that year.
How is popularity calculated?
Popularity is based on the number of babies given each name. Rankings are determined by counting all babies with that name in a given year and comparing to other names.
Why might a name rank differently in different states?
Regional preferences, cultural influences, and demographic factors cause naming trends to vary by state. Names popular in Texas may be less common in Vermont, and vice versa.
What makes a name "trending"?
Rising names have improved their rank significantly over the past 5 years. Falling names have dropped in rank. Comeback names were popular before 1970 but are now regaining popularity.

Name Choosing Tips

Should I choose a popular or unique name?
It depends on your preference! Popular names are widely accepted but your child may share their name with classmates. Unique names stand out but may require frequent spelling/pronunciation corrections.
How can I tell if a name is trendy vs. classic?
Classic names maintain steady popularity across decades. Trendy names spike quickly then decline. Our trend charts show this pattern clearly for each name.
What should I consider when choosing a baby name?
Consider: how it sounds with your last name, potential nicknames, initials (avoid unfortunate acronyms), ease of spelling/pronunciation, and any family or cultural significance.
Are there names I should avoid?
Be cautious of names that are very difficult to spell/pronounce, create awkward initials, or have strong negative associations. Our data can help you spot names that have declined sharply in popularity.
