Etymology
At the core of the name ʻAmmōn is the element ʻamm- which meant "grandfather, forefather" in Proto-West-Semitic . Genesis 19:37-38 describes the Ammonites as descended from Ben- ʻ Ammi , a son of Lot with his younger daughter who plotted with her sister to intoxicate Lot and, in his inebriated state, have intercourse with him to become pregnant. Thus the name Ben- ʻ Ammi literally means "son of my grandfather". Attached to the stem ʻamm- "grandfather, forefather" is the Canaanite suffix - ōn which originally had an adjectival meaning. Together, ʻAmmōn meant "of the grandfather".
