Historically, the native English term for eagle was "ern" ( Old English : earn ), derived from Proto-Germanic *arnuz , and thus cognate with other synonymous words in Germanic languages such as German Aar , Dutch arend , Swedish örn and Gothic 𐌰𐍂𐌰 ( ara ).
