Etymology
As the first new settlement in the "Greek project" of Empress Catherine and her favourite Grigory Potemkin , it was named after the Heraclea Pontic colony of Chersonesus ( Ancient Greek : Χερσόνησος , romanized : Khersónēsos [ kʰer.só.nɛː.sos ] ) which was located on the Crimean Peninsula , meaning 'peninsular shore'.
