The name is probably derived from the personal name Hora , meaning "the village of Hora's people", but it could be also derived from the word hořice , which is an Old Czech diminutive form of hora (i.e. 'mountain').

Church of Saint Gotthard The first written mention of Hořice is from 1143 in the foundation deed of the Strahov Monastery . It was founded on a hill later named Gothard, which was named after the Church of Saint Gotthard founded here in the 12th century. In the 13th century, the settlement was moved to strategically more advantageous place below the hill. In 1365, it was first documented as a market town .
