The word was borrowed from the Anglo-Norman language as the suffix -cience , which was borrowed from the Latin word scientia , meaning ' knowledge, awareness, understanding ' , a noun derivative of sciens meaning ' knowing ' , itself the present active participle of sciō ' to know ' .
